Writing and composing:-

Kavi Pradeep wrote the song "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo" in memory of the Indian soldiers who were martyred in the Indo-China War. Pradeep was deeply saddened by the number of people killed in the war. In late 1962, while walking on Mumbai's Mahim Beach, Pradeep was inspired. He borrowed a pen from another walker and wrote the first verse of the song on a piece of foil from his cigarette pack. A few weeks later, Pradeep was approached by producer Mehboob Khan to write a song for a fundraising event to be held at the National Stadium in New Delhi. Pradeep accepted the offer but did not give any details about the song he planned to write. He hired music director C. Ramachandra to write the music and asked Lata Mangeshkar to sing the song. According to Pradeep's daughter Mitul, due to some misunderstanding between Ramachandra and Lata, the music director chose Asha Bhosle as the singer. However, Pradeep felt that no one other than Mangeshkar could do it justice and so he personally convinced her to sing it. Mangeshkar agreed on the condition that Pradeep be present during the rehearsals. [ 1 ]

Mangeshkar suggested that the format of the song be changed from a solo to a duet with her and Asha as the singers. Pradeep wanted it to remain a solo song. Asha practiced for the song but shortly before flying to Delhi, Asha decided to withdraw from the event. Lata Mangeshkar tried to convince her otherwise, as her name was already attached to the event, details of which were printed in the newspapers. Legendary composer-singer Hemant Kumar who managed the entire project also tried hard to convince Asha, but he could not. So, Lata Mangeshkar had to sing it alone.(COPIED)

First performance:-

In January 2013, Lata Mangeshkar said in an interview that she had initially refused the chance to sing the song, as she did not have enough time to practise. "It was Kavi Pradeep ji (Kavi Pradeep), who wrote the immortal song, who came to me and asked me to sing the song. I refused because there was no time to practise. You see, at that time I was working round the clock. Paying special attention to one song seemed impossible. But Pradeep ji insisted, Lata said, admitting that she was very nervous before the performance. I regret that Pradeep ji was not called for the Republic Day celebrations where I sang the song. Had he been there, he could have seen with his own eyes what an impact 'Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon' had," Lata said. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ]

The first live performance of the song by Lata Mangeshkar was on 26 January 1963 and was held at an event in the National Stadium in New Delhi. President S. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru attended the performance because of Republic Day (26 January) 1963, which was just two months after the end of the war. [ 5 ] The performance of the song moved Nehru. [ 1 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] "People who do not feel inspired by Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon are not fit to be called Hindustani", said Nehru, who was visibly moved by the song. [ 3 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] He called Lata Mangeshkar from behind the stage and personally told her, "Beta, aaj tumne mujhe rula diya" [you made me cry today]. In the evening there was a tea party at his home. He personally invited them, saying, "Shaam ko ghar pe milenge" [Please come to my evening tea-party today]. He was so impressed by the song that he left immediately after telling Lata this. [ 10 ]

The event raised ₹2 lakh (equivalent to ₹1.7 crore or US$200,000 in 2023) for the Army Welfare Fund. [ 11 ] The song's lyricist Pradeep was not invited to perform. Pradeep performed the song for Nehru at a function at Mumbai's RM High School on 21 March 1963. He also presented Nehru with the original handwritten lyrics of the song. [ 1 ] [ 6 ]
